SGI Conducts Seminar on Self Defense and Self Confidence of Women (View All News)

Self defense and self protection are important priorities for women in today's times. The most common crime that may happen to a woman is rape, but it is more about a feeling of dominance by one person over another rather than actual sex. According to statistics, the majority of rapes are perpetrated by men who women already know. Assault on women is also a common crime because assailants assume women will be passive and not fight back. The best way for women to fight back against crime is to prevent it from happening by avoiding being alone or being in badly lit areas. However, getting into such situations is sometimes inevitable.

Considering the importance of this issue in the present environment, Shail Group of Institutions organized a seminar on 'Self Defense and Self Confidence of Women' for staff and students. Major Preeti Chaturvedi of Holkar College presided over the function and stressed on the urgent need of self defense by women.

Ms Priya Rathore, a black belt in Taekwondo and gold medalist in All India Federation Cup 2012, elucidated various techniques of self defense of women. She said women should always rely on their brains for self defense, particularly when it comes to forming the right staying-alive attitude. For effective self defense tactics, women should look at empty-handed or unarmed fighting techniques, some of which are designed just for women.

When people talk about aerosol sprays in the context of self defense for women, they are usually talking about pepper spray which is said to be the most effective and an excellent self defense device you can arm yourself with Women who want to protect themselves from any assailant need to consider other tools as alternatives to more common items like guns or pepper spray. Her lecture was followed by demonstration of various self defense techniques. The daylong seminar was chaired by Dr Shilpa Tripathy and attended by all lady faculty members, staff and students of Shail Group of Institutions with rapt attention. Large number of queries showed the interest generated by an effective and interesting demonstration. Ms Aruna Patil, Welfare Officer coordinated the event.
